Pets love car rides almost as much as people do, and taking your pet for a weekend drive can be a great experience. However, the car can be a dangerous place for your beloved animal if you're not careful. Here are four tips to help you keep your pet safe in the car:
1. Keep the windows rolled up.
While it may look cute to see your dog with their head stuck out the window, that's also very dangerous for your pet. Dogs can fall out the window, or they can be hurt by a car driving too close. It's best to use the air conditioner and keep the windows rolled up when your cat or dog is in the car.
2. Never put your pet in the back of a truck.
Riding with your pet in your truck bed is dangerous for you, your pet, and other motorists. Even the most well-behaved animals can be startled. You don't want your dog suddenly taking an interest in something and jumping out of your truck. This can be fatal if they jump while your car is moving, and they can get hit by another car or cause an accident. Even keeping your dog leashed in a truck bed is a bad idea, since the leash can hurt them if they jump.
3. Invest in a pet net barrier.
Buying a car seat or a seat belt for your pet is unnecessary, but you should keep your pet from jumping in the front seat. Having your pet trying to get your attention or climbing onto you while you drive is very distracting, and it can cause you to hit other vehicles. 4. Remember the water.
